A child of Sunna and Norder heritage, Althealansi is willowy and sharp. With a height of approximately five feet and eleven inches, she could almost be intimidating, if not for her obviously sheltered upbringing. Though she is strongly-built for a woman of noble heritage, with a muscular physique born of long days spent outdoors and an overall slimness that is uncommon for a woman raised among Norder nobility, she is bereft of any obvious physical flaws – void of scars, disfigurement, or any suggestion of improperly healed injuries. Althea’s entire presence suggests a sort of naivete, from her bearing (ostentatious, deceptively overconfident, and likely designed to draw attention), to her youth (barely an adult, still in possession of the last remnants of the fullness that comes with adolescence), to her striking style of dress.

Dark-skinned and dark-haired, Althea primarily takes after her mother. Her wavy hair is kept long, falling just a bit more than mid-way down her back when let down. Like many fae, her electric blue eyes are devoid of pupils, but they remain rather expressive, likely due to her magic’s influence. She inherited her sharp features from her father; high cheekbones, with cheeks that are gaunt in spite of her youthful physique, two long ears which taper straight up to points, and a pronounced nose. She is long-legged, short waisted, and relatively effeminate in build, though the curve of her bust and hips is fairly subtle.

Althea’s most striking feature is also her most shameful. A pair of massive wings, reminiscent of those of a blue morpho butterfly, sprout from her shoulders, marking her as a tainted fae. Althea is extremely self-conscious of her wings, and, though most of her wardrobe is coordinated to accommodate them (resigning her to primarily wearing shades of blue), make no mistake – she resents them, and, when possible, attempts to hold them in a way that suggests they might be some ornate cloak or accessory, rather than a set of wings. Thin, delicate, and inflexible, her wings cannot support her in flight, but, with sufficient height or wind, they can allow her to glide for short periods of time, an ability she rarely utilizes. They seem extremely fragile, and, in truth, it is a miracle that they are still in good condition; they are often cumbersome during even the most mundane activities, and, like the wings of their insect counterparts, will “shed” scales if sufficiently disturbed. (Unlike the wings of her insect counterparts, the scales on Althea’s wings grow back.)

She can often be found in a simple suit of leather-and-cloth armor, more subtle than she’d prefer but ideal for travelling, but she has a significant collection of formalwear (all in blue) which she will pull out when the occasion demands it.

Capricious, conceited, and facetious, Althealansi Yver initially appears to be the perfect image of a haughty, arrogant noblewoman. She is an overwhelming personality, with an eye-catching, presumptuous attitude and very little shame; prone to flirtation and gossip, but disinterested in anything of substance, she appears to be a social butterfly with little interest in being known. She is often unbearably smug, prone to picking fights for the sake of picking a fight, and easily bored, with a fickle temperament and interests that shift as quickly as the changing wind. She never lingers for long, if she lingers at all. She dislikes dragons, and she doesn’t seem to understand humans, though she holds no real prejudice towards them. She appears to be little more than shallow, vapid, and dangerously overconfident – but perhaps this is not all there is to Althea.

Close examination of Althea will reveal that the most of her personality is an exceptionally well-crafted façade. It would be accurate to say that Althea thinks and acts as she believes that she should. (This is often hamstringed by her forced empathy.) She is determined to be a perfect daughter of her family, to uphold the good name of her bloodline, but she often struggles to maintain her image. She is far more naïve than she appears, as a result of both her young age and her solitary upbringing, and her confidence and self-esteem are lacking; she relies heavily on her ability to sense the intentions of others to keep her out of trouble, much as she resents it. Althealansi is extremely insecure, and she shies away from any kind of meaningful relationship or interaction because she believes that her magic will inevitably become involved with it, preventing her from ever truly being liked, loved, or accepted. She is deeply cynical, with little faith in the good nature of others, and, in truth, little faith in her own nature – she knows that the slightest stumble will send her magic streaming out as a maelstrom, and she knows the irrevocable harm it can do.

Her magic terrifies her, both because of what it can do and what she fears will happen to her if it is discovered by the wrong people. She exists with a certain amount of perpetual fear.

In spite of her flaws, Althea is extremely well-read and rather clever, with a quick wit and subtle charm that comes out when she is not attempting to maintain her image. Although she was raised with a silver spoon, she is extremely dedicated and hardworking, with a strong determination to prove herself in the eyes of others. (This can be a blessing or a curse, depending on who she desires validation from.) She is extremely empathetic, and much kinder than she likes to let on, with a particular fondness for the downtrodden and underdogs of the world.  
part one. familial background & history.

To properly explain Althealansi Yver, one must begin with certain events which transpired before she was born.

The Yvers are a minor family of fae nobility that have resided in Norderhalt for many years; historically, they have been well-known for their powerful Lopt magic, but, as generations have passed, the magic in their bloodline has grown increasingly diluted, to the point of almost disappearing entirely. Auridion Yver, the solitary heir of the family blessed with weak Lopt magic, was arranged as a mate to Coronette Ausblud, a bruni fae from a noble family in Vestri, when both were children. Though they did not love each other at first, their relationship soon grew to something warm and passionate, and after spending a number of years together, the two had a child – their firstborn and heir, Tagranviel Yver. Tagranviel’s birth was difficult, and came in the most vicious months of Ventra; soon after giving birth, Coronette fell sick and died.

This was not surprising, but it was nevertheless devastating. Auridion was heartbroken, left to raise his newborn son on his own.

Although he was reluctant, he arranged a courtship with a young fae from Sunnarst, Haelissa Moonweaver, in hopes that she could act as a mother for his young son. Haelissa was warm and bright, and she came unprepared for the hostility she often faced in Norderhalt; she was of common birth, and a barren fae besides. Nevertheless, she took good care of Tagranviel and treated him as her own, for she doubted that she would ever be able to have a child.

Tagranviel’s magic began to manifest at a young age, and, though his powers were relatively weak because of his diluted bloodline, he was immediately recognized as a talent because of his technical prowess. His air magic was brutal in its simplicity, and his father began to make arrangements for him to train as a knight, although he would not be able to begin his training for several more years.

Haelissa wondered what would happen to her after he left. It was enough to inspire paranoia; she didn’t want to be shoved aside or replaced. Although she was Auridion’s mate, she never felt that he loved her, so she hired a group of Norder dragon hunters in secret, to help her gain magic of her own. She was met with good news almost immediately. They’d found a small dragon in the remote woodlands near the manor, and they were willing to help her hunt it down, but, in order to prove her conviction, she had to strike the killing blow herself.

She agreed.

The dragon was small and delicate, no larger than a dog, with wings that resembled those of a butterfly. When she looked at it, Haelissa almost pitied it, for the creature was beautiful, and it felt like a shame to kill it. Nevertheless, she gathered her courage and stalked it with the hunters, who caught it like a rabbit in a net. It thrashed, snapped – one of the hunters stepped away, clutching his head, and turned on his brother-in-arms, who yelled at her to finish it off.

She shoved her spear into the dragon’s chest and forced it to the ground – like a pinned insect, convulsing around the tip. Haelissa had never much cared for dragons, but, as she stared at its writhing form, and she heard the little thing screech and wail, she felt tears that were not her own begin to trip thick trails down her cheeks. As it twitched helplessly, mouth open in an o of bloody, wet screams, she felt herself collapse to her knees and began to sob.

Still, she did not save it. She stood merciless before the dying beast, but she could not look at it as it took its final, heaving breaths. Even the hunters, ruthless as they were, had collapsed to tears when she looked back; and the man who the dragon had manipulated lay dead in the field, his mouth dripping blood, his chest split open with his brother’s sword.

She took the dragon’s blood at great lost, and, salty tears still streaming down her face, drank deeply of it. A few weeks later, she discovered that she was pregnant. Her pregnancy was immensely difficult, wracked by pain and sickness; Auridion and Tagranviel did her best to comfort her, but she knew long before the child was born that she likely would not survive the process.

Her daughter was born prematurely. The process was deadly.

When the midwife brought the child out for her father and brother to see, she was sobbing inconsolably, like the child in her arms. Auridion took his daughter from her, and perhaps he gasped; perhaps he despaired.

Two wings, as deep a blue as those of the dead dragon’s, clung to the wailing newborn’s back – still clumped and dripping with sticky fluid, as though they’d just burst forth from a cocoon.

part two. childhood.

Born on the cusp of the Fifty Year’s War, Althealansi grew up with the constant threat of violence ever-present in the background of her life, like some distant white noise. She was raised in her father’s estate, situated (un)comfortably in the far reaches of Norderhalt; most of the year, it was frigid and secluded. Visitors were rare, and travelling even rarer. (Her father preferred his isolation, particularly as the war began.) Their servants were human and fae alike, but, due to her noble heritage, her interaction with them was kept to a minimum; she could only rely on her brother for company.

Almost as soon as she could walk, her brother put a bow, which he named Moonlight, in her hand. Viel was kinder to her than her father, or the servants who would whisper about her wings behind her back. She displayed no aptitude for the elements, so they were forced to assume that she was as barren as her mother, and she was a second daughter. At best, she would be wed off to some poor suitor, and hopefully she wouldn’t reproduce, so her child wouldn’t inherit those wings. Who would want to curse their children with something like that? Perhaps they could find a surrogate. Althea could hear them, when they whispered, but it didn’t concern her, because she was still a girl. How could she understand what any of it meant? All that she knew was how it felt, and it felt bad, sometimes in a way that extended to physical sensations – a cold that made her fingers feel like they could fall off (which was hardly uncommon in Norder) or a sudden spike of nausea that made her flee the room, clutching at her stomach.

Viel was different. When she was with her brother, she always felt warm, like she was engulfed by sunshine on a hot, lazy summer day. Even her father didn’t always feel warm like Viel. He was the one who taught her to shoot her bow, almost religiously, because Althea wasn’t like him – she hadn’t inherited the family magic, so, unless she got her hands on dragon’s blood (And Althea was disgusted by the concept; she didn’t want to drink blood, even if it would give her the magic – and, with it, the validation – she so desperately craved. As a girl, this was primarily because she thought that it would be yucky.), she would only be able to defend herself in mundane ways.

When her father sent Viel away to train as a knight, Althea cried for days, an no one could console her. It was peculiar; rather than soothing the depressed child, anyone who attempted to comfort her seemed to fall into a depression themselves, often crying along with her. She did not quiet until she received her first letter from her brother. He wrote weekly, after that, to comfort her.

With her brother gone, Althealansi was forced to find ways to entertain herself. She spent hours and hours reading alone in the library, particularly intrigued by the books she’d find on the other regions – particularly those with maps. She continued her studies and practiced her archery on her own, but she rarely interacted with other children; there were rarely children around to interact with. She was lonely and solitary, and she hungered, desperately, for the love of others.

In the year 465, Althealansi disappears for the entire morning, and no one in the estate can find her. A pair of servants finally discover her in the woods bordering the mansion; in an act of defiance over her brother’s leaving, she had gone out into the forest alone with her bow to shoot at targets. The servants find her beside of the corpse of a rabbit, who seemed to have died earlier in the day. Apparently, she had fainted. When she wakes up, she does not remember how or why she fainted, only that she was possessed by such a sudden, paralyzing pain and agony before she collapsed. The doctors cannot find anything wrong with her physically. They tell her father and his servants to keep a close eye on her, but, in the days that follow, she seems fine. The incident is dismissed as a freak accident.

They do not know it yet, but this is a prelude of things to come.

part three. adolescence.

In 474, Tagranviel Yver, the beloved heir, was declared dead. He was killed while protecting a small settlement from bandits, the report claimed; his body could not be recovered.

When Althea heard the news, she collapsed in the floor of the living room and wept for hours. In fact, every member of the mansion’s household and staff wept that afternoon, even those who’d never met the young heir.

The only small blessing which came from Viel’s death was that it forced Auridion closer to his daughter, who was now the heiress of the Yver family. He set to arrange a marriage for her almost immediately, though he kept the existence of her wings concealed, and made her lessons immensely more difficult. Gone were her long days spent exploring the woods; they were replaced by hours of etiquette, history, strategy, music….every subject conceivable. Privately, Althea found it exhausting, but she was often taught by her father, so she endured it. If she did well, she knew that she could win his favor.

Her newfound duties didn’t just win Althea the favor of her father, however. Everyone in the mansion began to treat her differently – more warmly. She assumed that it was a sign she was doing well as the heiress, and, in spite of the loss of her freedom, Althealansi was happy. She was loved. She still mourned her brother, and she often visited his grave, but she did not have to visit alone; her father would often accompany her.

In 481, Althealansi met her fiancé for the first time. His name was Relissar, or simply Sar, and he was from a family in Austanferd – the Casi. He was a handsome boy, with dark brown hair and equally dark eyes, and, when he smiled, he smiled all the way to his eyes. Though he and his family were initially apprehensive about her wings, and the isolated location of the Yver family’s manor, Althea managed to win them over with her newfound charm and cheerful demeanor. She had longed for a companion, and he was kind-hearted and warm, so, though their relationship was arranged, she bonded with her future partner quickly. She wanted him to love her, too. She hoped that he would.

They remained in touch by letters in the years that followed, and they often visited each other on holidays. Their parents were delighted that they were so close; it was a sign that they would have happy, fortuitous lives together.

In the years that followed, Althea pursued her lessons with increased determination. She grew into a proud and confident young noblewoman, in spite of the disparaging comments that always accompanied her wings; she was unconcerned with life outside of her social circle, and she paid as little attention to the hostilities between humans and fae as possible.

In 495, Althealansi’s magic was discovered.

part four. fallout.

It was another Geyma fae, of course. Who else could discover it? Some relative of Sar’s; their families had gathered together for a small celebration at the Yvers’ estate.

When he called her out from the crowd and declared that she was using her magic to manipulate the emotions of everyone around her, Althealansi was startled. She remembers how all the eyes in the crowd – friends, family, even someone she considered a lover – turned to stare at her, how their expressions shifted from shock to mistrust to accusation. She protested. She couldn’t have magic that could only belong to a Geyma; her mother had been barren, and her father was a Lopt. Unfortunately, that was only further incriminating, for it suggested that she had obtained the dragon’s blood herself and used her powers knowingly.

She hadn’t. Everything that she was discovering was the influence of her magical ability – the fainting, the empathy, the way that she could charm others into liking her, if she wanted them to – was something that she’d thought was entirely normal. That was the most insidious aspect of her magic. It was so terribly subtle that it was possible to never discover it at all.

The worst part of discovering her magic, Althealansi would come to find out, was not the realization that no one she’d thought had loved her actually did – it was that they all assumed that she had been using her magic intentionally.

Her engagement was broken off. She was shunned by her father, who would not speak to her for days; her father convinced the Casi family to keep her magic a secret, for the danger that might come to her if such insidious powers were discovered by someone with evil intentions, and she was told never to use it again. He called a tutor for her. She did not learn to use her magic; she learned to repress it. She insisted that she knew nothing about the magic, or how she’d obtained it, but her father would not listen.

Althea wondered if he would ever trust her again.

There is a solitary silver lining which comes soon after her magic is discovered. In 496, her brother is found alive – alive and well, but with holes in his memory. He is sent home almost immediately, and Althea is overwhelmed with joy. She loves her brother, and he loves her, and surely her magic was not powerful enough to influence him when she was a girl, the last time they met. Surely he will love her. Surely he will trust her.

Her brother arrived home in the cold of ventra. She waited with her father by the door. The moment that he stepped inside, Althea ran to him, and she threw herself into his arms, but-

The man who stood in front of her did not feel like her brother. Althea could not explain it – he looked like her brother, and he sounded like him, even acted like him, but she knew that he was not her brother, that he couldn’t be her brother. Touching him made her skin crawl; whenever he was in the room with her, she felt cold. She should have been happy to see her brother return, miraculous as it was, but she couldn’t shake the suspicion that the man who’d come back was not her brother. However, there was no one she could tell. Her father no longer trusted her – no one in the mansion trusted her. And he was so happy to have his son back. How could she break his heart by telling him that the man who claimed to be his son wasn’t his son at all, that he was some stranger masquerading as her brother? She couldn’t know that he wasn’t Viel, after all. She had no proof. Even if she did, she was no longer sure if he would believe her.

With her brother’s return, Althealansi was relieved of her duties as an heiress. In their absence, she continued some of her lessons, but occupied her time with reading, or, on occasion, creeping off to the woods. It was while she was in the woods that she saw her brother speaking with a strange, human man; she escaped before they could notice her, but, once she returned to the safety of the estate, she locked herself in her room and collapsed on the bed, clutching at her chest. The man was cold, colder even than her brother. She had gotten too close to him. He made her heart hurt.

One night in 498, she decided to test her brother; she asked him about her bow. He didn’t know its name – he didn’t even recall that he was the one who gave it to her. Althea smiled through the conversation, but, internally, she was horrified, because this man was not – could not be – her brother. The heir to her family was a stranger, and she couldn’t discern his purpose, or why he seemed so impossibly similar to her beloved brother.

She cried herself to sleep, mourning her brother for the second time. The next morning, her father told her that everyone in the manor had cried the previous night; a subtle hint that she should keep her emotions in check. The man who claimed to be her brother watched her suspiciously all the while, and she feigned ignorance, claiming that she’d experienced some painful nausea the previous evening, and it had brought her to tears. She was terrified. He terrified her.

In the years that followed, she would sneak out to visit her brother’s grave. Almost all of it had been destroyed upon his return, but she cared for what little remained, left offerings where she would have found his headstone. She spent as much time as she could outdoors, away from her brother. She couldn’t be sure what the man wanted, but she wanted no part of it.

She made up her mind to escape in 500 – but then the monarchy was overthrown.

part six. end of fifty year’s war.

Though the Yvers quietly supported the fae king, they maintained enough of an image of neutrality to avoid most of the consequences reserved for his supporters, and they passed the war quietly, until the moment the human king took the throne. Auridion pledged their support, largely out of necessity, after a servant attempted to kill Althea in her bedchambers one night.

She did not succeed; she didn’t even graze her with the knife. Althealansi recalls waking up in a panic, her stomach churning and her skin impossibly cold, to find the woman standing over her – it was the first time she intentionally used her magic, and she prayed that it would be the last. Her father found her sitting upright in her bed, with the maid collapsed alongside the bed, sobbing her apologies. She’d destroyed her desire to hurt her and replaced it with something else instead.

(Her father still had the maid killed. Althea couldn’t watch. It would be dangerous, he said, if anyone learned of her magic. After that, he fired all the human servants in the mansion.)

She pretended not to notice the way that her brother watched her all morning, the day that followed, with a frown curled across his lips. It only increased her panic – her urgent need to escape.

(She feared for her father, when she was gone.)

The year passed slowly, anxiously. The human king continued to consolidate his power. Althea heard terrible stories about the war from the fae servants, terrible stories about what he was doing to gain power – and she told herself that they were rumors, just rumors, and swept them under the rug.

At the end of the year, the world felt stable enough to ask her father if she could leave.

part seven. present day.

With the war over, Althea has taken the opportunity to leave the Yver Estate and explore the other regions. Her decision was met with little resistance from her father or brother; at home, she was languid, with no sense of duty or obligation. (That had been taken from her when her brother took back his status as the Yver family’s heir, or when her father refused to matchmake her again, or when she was relegated to the background whenever she was allowed out.) She doesn’t know what she wants, yet, but she knows that she wants something – and she can’t find it at home.

Before she left, her father took her into his study and reminded her, very sternly, to hide her magic. She knew. She knows.

(Secretively, she seeks answers for what happened to her brother, but, in truth she is not sure that she wants the answer – she is scared of what she might find.) 
 
Althealansi possesses extremely potent Geyma magic, but that does not mean that she is particularly adept at utilizing it. Her magic manifests in the capacity to sense and manipulate emotions, often subconsciously. Because of her lack of control, she cannot “turn off” her magic, so her sensation abilities are always in effect passively – while standing within a few feet of others, she can usually feel their emotions, with the accuracy and specificity increasing with proximity. This ability is most potent with skin-to-skin contact, and, when touching people who are experiencing especially strong emotions, Althea can often become physically impacted by the strength of their feelings, sometimes to the point of dizziness, nausea, and, on rare occasion, fainting.

More intimidating is her ability to control the emotions of others. Althea resents this ability, and she rarely uses it consciously unless under the threat of physical harm; however, she has never been particularly good at controlling her magic, and she often fears that she is subconsciously using her magic to influence others, particularly when she experiences strong emotions. Victims of Althea’s magic rarely realize that they are being influenced, and they are often influenced in subtle ways – this influence does not necessarily lapse once they are out of her direct proximity and line of sight, though her control generally does, and residual damage is often only resolved with the passage of time.

When Althealansi’s emotions are particularly volatile, her magic tends to extend to a forced empathy which can impact everyone in a radius of several hundreds of feet – bringing them to tears, stirring them to rage, or filling them with ecstasy. She has no control of this aspect of her magic, either, and it only tends to emerge when her control is at its weakest.

(Because of the nature of Althea’s magic, it will not be used on other characters without permission. However, if you’d like your character to be subtly manipulated in one way or another in accordance with her own emotions and desires, feel free to include it in interactions with her with or without my permission; since Althea can’t control her powers, it might add a fun element of randomness to certain interactions.)
