The gods hate us
because we killed them
Boots ground into the earth as she walked, panting and annoyed. The heavy riding leathers that she wore felt tight, might be from the fact that she had walked the rest of the way to this ranch instead of riding as she should have. Wiping the sweat off her forehead she stopped walking, blowing a deep breath she gathered her thick hair up. Fingers gathered more of her hair, only for several strands to fall through and drop down her back. Cursing as she fumbled she finally gave up and let her hair fall back down, wiping the sweat off on the front of her cut top she straightened. Whinnies and neighs reached her, the ranch was far below. Easy to see from her vantage point on the hill, her finger wondered to her lips. Teeth chipping away at the nail, this was going to be fun.

"My what a beauty."  she breathed, her breathes coming hard and fast. She had lucked out, a passing stable hand had come down the road headed to the ranch she was walking too. The ride had helped her relax and take in the country, the only reason she was out of breath was for the fact that she had jumped down and ran to the fence. Too excited to see the horses, golden eyes roamed over the gathered beasts. Some grazed while others simply walked around, swatting flies. One, in particular, caught her eye, a beautiful stallion with a half white face and a black eye. Eyes tracked the stallion as he grazed, his great head rose to flick an ear. Brown eyes meeting hers before his skull dropped to graze, the sound of footsteps came towards her. A cough sounded before she turned around to study the owner beside her, a man of muscle and stature stood at her side also staring at the horses gathered before them.

"What can I do for you girl?" "Are all these horses unbroken?" "Yes, they are, the one you're eying is a vicious beast, why?" Grinning she heaved herself up onto the fence, leaning over the wood as it pushed into her corset's straps she swung her leg over and jumped down. Boots kicked up dirt as the ends of her coat caught the billow of earth. Rising she strode towards the horses, some ran the instant she started walking. Others stood watching her with caution, the stallion she approached raised his head slowly and seemed to challenge her with his stare.

"HEY!" She didn't listen to anyone, that just wasn't how she handled herself. Well, she wasn't going to listen to this man. Others had come out, the man's shouting having drowned in the background as she crept towards the horse. The beast stared, ears flicking to catch each sound that trailed towards them. His eyes never leaving the approaching woman, she froze when his head tossed. Squealing he spun to the left and raced off, not wanting to get left behind she ran after the horse. Not caring as her boots struck earth and horse shit, darting out of the way of other horses. Narrowly missing getting kicked by a bucking mare, protecting her foal. Shouts of alarm filtered through the dull roar of her blood in her ears, grinning wider she ran after the stallion. Corraling him towards a corner of the fence, the animal spun around to face her. Ears flat against his skull as he snorted and stamped his hoof, slowing down she spread her arms out.

Nickering the horse charged, darting to the right she grabbed the mane as he charged past. Pulling and lifting herself onto his back, yet already the horse was bucking. Teeth clicking in her skull, nipping the tip of her tongue as the taste of copper and salt-filled her mouth. Thinning her lips she gripped the horse's mane until she was almost fully seated on his back, and still, the horse bucked and reared. Twisting his head around to try and bite her leg, heels dug into the tender side of the animal. Earning a shriek and then a small window of bliss, the horse galloped forward. Bucking and trying to throw her off, the ground rushed up to her face as she hit the earth. Thrown from the stallions back, grunting she got up and dashed after the horse. Bruises already forming, she ran after the beast already he was skittish and giving her a cautious look. Rearing the horse lashed out, hooves connecting with her shoulder. Grunting from the pain the bloomed she ducked under and jumped onto his back, bucking again the horse began to twist around trying to pull her off, laughing she pulled herself onto its back and held on for dear life.

Sore muscles and bruises already took root, she was tired and it was beginning to show. So was the horse, foaming saliva dripped on her leather coat. He was walking now, heavy breaths rumbled from his lungs as he stood there. After trying to get her off for almost a half-hour, the horse had tired. The men who were gathered around the fence watched with their mouth open, leaning back she blew a stray strand of hair out of her eyes. Clicking her tongue she gentle tapped her heels into the horse's side, walking towards the fence she watched as the man who had come up to her lifted a halter, something she hadn't noticed until now. Sitting on the horse's skull she dropped off his back and staggered, her fingers skimming over the beasts sweaty side.

"I'd like to buy this one." Rage filled the man's face, opening his mouth to snap. "You want to buy a horse that you jumped on without my permission?" "Yes, how much?" The gathered men watched the arguing back and forth, prices being placed and shot down. Irritation sparked in the woman's golden hues, grabbing the man she jerked him towards her face. Their noses almost smashed together, "500 is my last offer, take it or I'm leaving with this horse. Without your pay taken from my purse." She hissed, after a quiet few seconds the man nodded. Shoving him back she lifted her purse and counted out five hundred gold coins, once that was done she watched her newly bought mount being led to a different part of the ranch. Her work was just now beginning.

The gods hate us
Because we killed them
A week had passed since she had broken the horse, now she was testing how he handled with her in the saddle. Occasionally he still threw her, but where was the fun in a horse that was far too tame? Galloping around the hills she tipped her head back, for once her life she was truly happy. She owned a magnificent mount, and it was all she ever wanted. Still, a name was needed for the beast, reigning in the horse she tenderly stroked his neck a frown etched in her brow. "Nefiel." She hmmed, the horse flicked back an ear, snorting he started walking. Obviously, he didn't like that name then, "Desarge, Abraxas, Atanas, Adray, Veliks..." The horse tossed his head at the last name she threw out, smiling she leaned forward and stroked his head. With a squeal Veliks charged forward, laughing she threw down the reigns and gripped his mane leaning forward. It felt like she was flying and not the fear-filled one when she had been picked up by the dragon, but the one she would have done racing her fellow hunters. Laughing she rode to where the ranch was, dismounting she took off the horses saddle and bridle. A personal set had been given to her after she bought the horse, something that the owner did to make sure she didn't steal the horse. Placing the tack on her new mount she climbed up, nodding to the owner she clicked her tongue and rode off. Veliks' training will continue when she got back to the capital, where he will be outfitted with armor and a new saddle.

Adorned in the gear of the hunters, laden with weapons and seen how far and fast he can go while carrying her and other items. Once that was done she could do as she liked with him, she would have to stop by the blacksmith while at home to see how her training gear was going. It was being custom built just for her, and it should be done by now. Not wanting to waste any more time than she already had she urged her new friend to go faster, the steady drum of hoofbeats under her brought a smile to her face again. A smile she hadn't allowed since her lover's death, wincing she shoved down the pain and only focused on the joy of riding instead of walking. Granted she was five hundred coins short now, she didn't care.
